Kizunian: Nature’s Child

   IMA Capstone Project | September 2023 - April 2024
A Visual Ode to the Bond Between Humanity and Nature

Kizunian: Nature's Child” is an immersive VR experience intends to interpret and showcase the connection between human and spiritual nature under the concept of animism. With the belief that a universal spiritual essence permeates every aspect of the natural world, it facilitates a silent yet potent dialogue between beings. As a result, my project intends to showcase how this belief in communal communication between organisms, including us humans, in turn shapes our perception towards the nature.

Idea to express in the project:

In our interconnected world, there exists a profound and nuanced communication among diverse organisms, a testament to the intricate web of life that binds us all. This concept, rooted in the philosophy of animism, posits that a universal spiritual essence permeates every aspect of the natural world, facilitating a silent yet potent dialogue between beings. According to this worldview, every entity, whether perceived as sentient by conventional standards or not, harbors the capacity to sense and respond to the desires and intentions of others, irrespective of their nature being benevolent or malevolent. It is this belief in a ubiquitous spiritual force that underscores the mutual responsiveness and interconnectedness of all existence.

Designs and Sketches_

Storyboard & Main Character Design for the story

Experimenting with the Scenes

General Design & Technical Setup:

Consisting of five interconnected scenes, "Kizunian: Nature's Child" guides viewers through an animistic perspective on the world. The design features a 'spiritual unit' depicted as a child-shaped energy cluster and the ancient essence of animism represented by tree trunk-like giants. Utilizing varied lighting, shaders, and an ambient soundtrack, each scene is crafted to evoke a sense of mystery and introspection. The non-interactive nature of the experience invites viewers to immerse themselves fully by observing and contemplating, either standing or seated with an Oculus II headset. Additional insights into the project's development are provided through a companion handbook, which includes sketches and inspirations to enhance understanding.

Creative, Philosophical, and Conceptual Implications:

The transition between scenes, with elements of nature portrayed in transformed or unfamiliar forms, subtly introduces the audience to the 'invisible yet significant' bonds that interlink all organisms. This artistic choice encourages a contemplation of our own place within the natural order, inviting a realization of the deep, often unseen connections that sustain life. Philosophically, the project posits that recognizing these bonds can lead to a more respectful and holistic approach to our environment, fostering a sense of unity and stewardship that transcends cultural and spiritual boundaries.
